Our province is one of the best places to study inherited diseases, due in part to the population’s large family sizes, genetic similarity, and higher rates of some genetic traits.
Studying families in Newfoundland and Labrador allows us to compare the genetics of relatives affected by a disease with those who are not. This may help us identify genetic factors passed down through generations and study their possible role in disease development and progression.
This research aims to uncover potential genetic links to disease that may go undetected in other populations and are important to the development of new medicines for people everywhere.
