    Chief Scientific Officer

    Sequence Bio is a pioneering biotech company based in Newfoundland and Labrador. We have recently raised a first venture round led out of the Bay Area and are seeking a Chief Scientific Officer to join our executive team. For the right candidate, Sequence Bio offers a rare opportunity to truly drive innovative drug discovery and transform the field of precision medicine. Think bigger than “career opportunity” – for this role, Sequence Bio seeks a true partner who will grow with and help shape the future of the organization in the critical years of progress that lie ahead. Applicants from anywhere in North America are welcomed, provided that you are open to relocating within 1-2 years. Until that time, at least 20% travel will be required.

    Responsibilities:

    • Manage scientific development projects and drive all research activities; provide overall scientific leadership within the organization and to the broader scientific community
    • Work with the executive team to create a scientific strategy and set research priorities for the organization in line with the mission to become a leader in data-driven drug discovery
    • Work with the executive team to establish and maintain advantageous partnerships in academia, industry and government; Launch collaborations with scientific partners and research institutions to complete ambitious projects
    • Identify the top R&D talent and establish a strong, cohesive team
    • Work with the executive team to direct the build-out of R&D infrastructure including wet lab space, computational infrastructure and full sequencing, sample preparation and biobanking capabilities
    • Identify, select and partner with external vendors and scientific platforms to maximize research capabilities of the operation; Work with technical team to coordinate with vendors and integrate novel platforms for sequencing genomics, bioinformatics, computational science and biobanking
    • Work with partners to understand, derive meaning from and make meaningful use of generated data
    • Contribute to elevating the company’s profile on the global stage and act as the spokesperson for the organization in scientific matters
    • Represent the scientific goals and interests of the company at relevant press conferences, meetings, conventions and shareholder events
    • Maintain current, expert-level knowledge of the latest approaches to, and science of, genomics, the other “-omics”, bioinformatics, and systems biology and awareness of technological advances and industry trends, especially in the areas of drug discovery and development and the application of genomics to medical practice and patient care

    Qualifications:

    • Must have a Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.) in Computational or Genomics-Based Drug Discovery, or a related discipline that combines Computational Biology, Systems Biology, Human Genomics, Biomedical Informatics and Pharmacology as well as a completed post-doctoral fellowship, a current academic position or industry experience
    • Deep understanding of genomics, bioinformatics, medicine, drug discovery and development, pre-clinical and clinical research
    • Must have current, expert-level knowledge of whole-genome sequencing techniques and modern computational approaches to drug discovery; preference given to candidates with working knowledge of current platforms and methodologies employed in the later stages of the computational drug development pipeline as well
    • Statistical expertise and experience working with large, complex datasets of genotype-phenotype information
    • Broad knowledge of regulatory requirements surrounding clinical, medical genetics and genomics research is an asset

    Infrastructure Administrator

    As the Infrastructure Administrator, you’ll be responsible for architecting and implementing cloud infrastructure to support Sequence Bio applications. Reporting directly to the VP, Engineering and Information Security and working with the rest of the technology team, you’ll help to ensure Sequence Bio implements a secure set of cloud services and applications to enable genomic research and engage participants.

    The Infrastructure Administrator is responsible for the stability, integrity and performance of all infrastructure environments including storage, servers, networking, virtualization, automation systems and all associated hardware and software solutions. This is a hands-on role involving management and operation of all activities across the engineer-deploy-operate continuum.

    You’ll help define support and communication processes; work with operational and engineering experts to develop monitoring, reporting and automation; and work with development teams to ensure the needs of our applications are met.

    Main Business Functions

    • Architect cloud infrastructure leveraging AWS technology and best practices.
    • Ensure the proper management, maintenance and provisioning of all environments.
    • Help lead our infrastructure team to greater heights of effectiveness, customer service and accomplishment.
    • Ensure the infrastructure team follows best practices when it comes to information security, regulatory compliance, incident management, problem management and change management.
    • Responsible for the proper monitoring and alerting of all environments.
    • Responsible for internal infrastructure projects which may require cross departmental coordination to achieve goals.
    • Provide input into infrastructure lifecycle, improvement and standardization strategies.
    • Drive the objectives associated with problem management; such as customer communication and Root Cause Analysis reports.
    • Develop internal SOPs, processes and training to ensure infrastructure team members have the needed skills and tools to support the production environments and deliver on project commitments.
    • Produce utilization reports to provide visibility to resource availability.
    • Other duties as required by the executive team.

    Experience

    • 5+ years experience in the Service Delivery or IT/Cloud Operations areas.
    • Bachelor’s degree, diploma in a related field or equivalent industry experience.
    • AWS cloud services IaaS engineering experience is required.
    • Experience with Terraform, CloudFormation, or any other IaC tools is an asset.
    • AWS certifications desired.
    • Enthusiastic, high-energy individual, self-motivated, people-oriented and self-directed.
    • Strong relationship building skills.
    • Proven strong oral and written communication skills.
    • Proven ability to effectively work with cross-functional teams.
    • Prior experience with Agile methodologies especially Kanban is a bonus.
    • Prior experience with containers and orchestration is a bonus.

    Working as part of the general team for at Sequence Bio requires moderate travel and a commitment to flexible working hours. Additional hours will be required during peak project deployment.
