    Chief Scientific Officer

    Sequence Bio is a pioneering biotech company based in Newfoundland and Labrador. We have recently raised a first venture round led out of the Bay Area and are seeking a Chief Scientific Officer to join our executive team. For the right candidate, Sequence Bio offers a rare opportunity to truly drive innovative drug discovery and transform the field of precision medicine. Think bigger than “career opportunity” – for this role, Sequence Bio seeks a true partner who will grow with and help shape the future of the organization in the critical years of progress that lie ahead. Applicants from anywhere in North America are welcomed, provided that you are open to relocating within 1-2 years. Until that time, at least 20% travel will be required.


    • Manage scientific development projects and drive all research activities; provide overall scientific leadership within the organization and to the broader scientific community
    • Work with the executive team to create a scientific strategy and set research priorities for the organization in line with the mission to become a leader in data-driven drug discovery
    • Work with the executive team to establish and maintain advantageous partnerships in academia, industry and government; Launch collaborations with scientific partners and research institutions to complete ambitious projects
    • Identify the top R&D talent and establish a strong, cohesive team
    • Work with the executive team to direct the build-out of R&D infrastructure including wet lab space, computational infrastructure and full sequencing, sample preparation and biobanking capabilities
    • Identify, select and partner with external vendors and scientific platforms to maximize research capabilities of the operation; Work with technical team to coordinate with vendors and integrate novel platforms for sequencing genomics, bioinformatics, computational science and biobanking
    • Work with partners to understand, derive meaning from and make meaningful use of generated data
    • Contribute to elevating the company’s profile on the global stage and act as the spokesperson for the organization in scientific matters
    • Represent the scientific goals and interests of the company at relevant press conferences, meetings, conventions and shareholder events
    • Maintain current, expert-level knowledge of the latest approaches to, and science of, genomics, the other “-omics”, bioinformatics, and systems biology and awareness of technological advances and industry trends, especially in the areas of drug discovery and development and the application of genomics to medical practice and patient care


    • Must have a Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.) in Computational or Genomics-Based Drug Discovery, or a related discipline that combines Computational Biology, Systems Biology, Human Genomics, Biomedical Informatics and Pharmacology as well as a completed post-doctoral fellowship, a current academic position or industry experience
    • Deep understanding of genomics, bioinformatics, medicine, drug discovery and development, pre-clinical and clinical research
    • Must have current, expert-level knowledge of whole-genome sequencing techniques and modern computational approaches to drug discovery; preference given to candidates with working knowledge of current platforms and methodologies employed in the later stages of the computational drug development pipeline as well
    • Statistical expertise and experience working with large, complex datasets of genotype-phenotype information
    • Broad knowledge of regulatory requirements surrounding clinical, medical genetics and genomics research is an asset
